FISIP UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta Brings Back Offline Campus Introduction

The Orientation for Nationalism Campus Life of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences 2022 was held face-to-face at Campus II UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta on Monday, August 15, 2022. The event was attended by 749 new students from four Study Programs including Business Administration, International Relations, Public Relations, and Communication Science.

The activity started from 07.30 to 16.00 WIB. It began with an assembly and the Maumere Dance, followed by singing the Indonesian national anthem, the Mars Bela Negara, and speeches. The main event included topics on campus administration services and self-improvement materials. It was also enlivened by art performances, campus organization introductions, and award sessions.

Similar to other campus introduction activities, the purpose of this event was to familiarize new students with campus life. What makes it different is the emphasis on instilling and strengthening nationalism.

Agus Salim, as the Chairperson of the New Student Orientation FISIP 2022 from the faculty committee, expressed that nationalism is a characteristic of UPN campus. "The essence of nationalism is the spirit of resilience and not being cowardly, so that when facing problems, one does not lose spirit and stays focused on the goals to be achieved," he explained.

He also stated that the orientation could help students in self-development. This event also facilitates students to learn soft skills outside the classroom.

"Successful people are not only supported by the GPA they get in class. But in fact, there are many things outside the classroom that are much more accessible through organizations and friendships, especially in this mini-Indonesia from various regions where they can also learn new cultures," he added.

This year, the orientation adopted the theme "Diopthrology (Digitizing Our Perspective Through Technology)" and made the Marvel Cinematic Universe as its thematic concept. The theme went viral on social media because it was considered interesting and resonated with the interests of today's youth.

"We chose Marvel because we were inspired by its characters who use digital assistance to save the earth," said Ekita Samudra Tuahta, Chairperson of the New Student Orientation FISIP 2022 from the student committee.

This theme adopts the value of collaboration between humans and technology from the film series. Through the story characters, Marvel characters utilize technology and digital assistance to save the earth and transition it from the previous world to a better one. The hope is that new students can have the strong determination of a superhero so that they can collaborate with technology in real action.

Considering that the orientation activities are held in the post-pandemic era, the committee made special preparations related to health during the event.

"When new students arrive, there are two health screenings, first using a thermogun and second scanning the Peduli Lindungi barcode. We also provide masks and hand sanitizers as well as a medical post containing medicines for new students and cooperate with the Volunteer Corps. Basically, we have prepared well for health matters," he explained.

Before the event takes place, new students are also urged to have been vaccinated in their respective areas. For students above 18 years old, it is mandatory to have received the booster vaccine, while for those under 18 years old, only receiving the first or second vaccine dose is sufficient. For those who have not had the booster vaccine, they must undergo an antigen swab.

New students responded enthusiastically because the orientation activities were conducted in a fun and informative manner without physical or verbal bullying. "Exciting, the speakers were good, and the materials really fit with young people," said Dhea Arda Kia, one of the participants. (Dias Nurul Fajriani)
